Happy hump day, Lights! We know Wednesdays aren't everyone's favorite days, so we thought we'd start up something called #LightInspo. These are extraordinary stories of everyday people and communities shining their #light! We'll start of with James Robertson formerly of Detroit. He's also known as the "Walking Man" because he used to walk 21 miles and take two busses just for his $10.55/hr job. With his old car busted and Detroit's budget for city services like busses cut, Robertson said he didn't mind sleeping only a few hours a night to make it in time for work the next day. When news broke of his brutal commute his story went viral and reached then teenager Evan Leedy. Leedy set up a GoFundMe page for Robertson which raised a whopping $350,000 to buy Robertson a car. After he got his new car, Robertson told Leedy to use the rest of the money raised to help other people. #LoveAndLightAlways #WeAreLightwork
One way to share some #LightLove this Monday is to donate your clothes to a local charity! Don't just toss your lightly loved sweatshirt away just because the seasons are changing. Places like the Salvation Army and Society of St. Vincent de Paul regularly accept donations that help the poor and needy. It's not that hard to be a LIGHT! #LoveAndLightAlways #WeAreLightwork
Thank you to @plknonprofit for the opportunity to join in serving Skid Row this afternoon. Along with @plknonprofit services of resume building and counseling @wearelightwork provided new clothes and shoes. Their mission is beautiful! Check them out! Big or small, everything counts:)
Happy Monday, Lights! Start off your week by sharing some #LightLove with the people around you. Give someone a ride to school or work. See if you can help your coworker with one of their projects. Offer to tutor/study with a classmate struggling in class. Wherever you can help...reach out and help! We're all in this together! Text your friend to say you care for them. These are all little things, but it's the little things that go a long way. (Post 3/3) We were able to deliver the food to the community and got to spend the day with some amazing people! As you can see, you won't find any faces full of hopelessness and destitute. Yes, they were praying for a means to have rice during the rainy season, and the Philippines face some of the worst poverty conditions in the world. BUT! It is a STRONG characteristic among Filipinos to find something to laugh at or be happy about in any occasion. A common cliché is that money can't buy happiness, yet everyone always stresses about their finances and how they'd be happier if they had financial security. Take a moment and think about the moments in which you were happy, the things that make you laugh, and the things that made you smile. Most of these moments had NOTHING to do with riches and EVERYTHING to do with the LIGHT within you and the people around you. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR HELPING US SPREAD THIS LIGHT!! (Post 2/3) We used the $1,100 (57,332 ₱) which YOU contributed to purchase 25 sacks of rice (25kg. each), 2,000 packets of noodles, 200 notebooks, 200 boxes of crayons, a snack for the day, with the remaining $100 (5,212 ₱) donated to the community. Half a sack of rice feeds the community for one week. So if you do the math....25 sacks of rice will feed them for 17 MONTHS!! That's well over a YEAR. We swear #GodsTiming is insane. (Post 1/3) Happy Easter/Passover everyone!! To share the message of LOVE and LIGHT today, here's what we were able to do for the Aeta community of Zambales! The original plan was to help the children with essential needs for school supplies, etc. When we got there, we found out they needed so much more than that. As mentioned in a previous post, the Aeta communities often find themselves in poverty stricken, isolated areas. This males it difficult for them to get resources from the larger towns and cities. It became known to us that the whole community was PRAYING for rice. Once the rainy season begins in the Philippines their roads will be closed off, making it virtually impossible for the community to even get food. (....cont. next post)
To really understand the culture Balikbayan, you have to take into consideration the OFW. OFW stands for Offshore Filipino Worker. They're the men and women who go abroad, earn their wages, and send their earnings back home to the Philippines. Some contracted workers can be away from home for a few seasons, but some stay abroad for YEARS earning as much as they can to send back to their families. OFWs like engineers, domestic caretakers, and health industry professionals contribute about 10% to the country's GDP. The balikbayan box that gets sent home to the Motherland isn't just filled with old clothes you can't fit in anymore or dozens of cans of Spam or delicacies foreign to the Philippines. Many of these boxes are filled with essential items that help families back home survive. We're so excited to share what we were able to do for the Aeta community back home in Zambales.
